Citalopram, a furancarbonitrile, is one of the SEROTONIN UPTAKE INHIBITORS used as an antidepressant. It is used in depressed patients who also suffer from tardive dyskinesia in preference to tricyclic antidepressants. Citalopram is also effective in reducing ethanol uptake in alcoholics.
