Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase type 5 (TRAP/ACP5) gene spans 3 kb on human chromosome 19p13.2. TRAP enzyme is a member of acid phosphatase family that catalyzes the conversion of orthophosphoric monoester to alcohol and orthophosphate. It is widely expressed in human liver and osteoclasts.

Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase type 5 (TRAP/ACP5) is an iron binding protein that plays a crucial role in the bone resorption process. Decreased expression of the gene has been observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Genetic variations of the gene leads to the development of immuno-osseous disorder spondyloenchondrodysplasia, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a type I interferon (IFN) signature.
