The PRKCB1 (protein kinase C β) gene encodes for a serine/threonine kinase. The protein consists of a regulatory moiety at its N-terminal, a catalytic domain at C-terminal and a flexible hinge region joining the two. The PRKCB1 gene is located within the human chromosome 16p12.2-p12.

The members of protein kinase C (PKC) family participate in important biological processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. PKC promotes cancer progression and is therefore prefered as a target for chemotherapy. Activation of PKC β prevents the stimulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase induced by insulin. Inhibition of PKC β retains vascular function. PKC β action is associated with endothelial inflammation.
