Thrombopoietin (TPO) stimulates the proliferation and maturation of megakaryocytes, and promotes increased circulating levels of plateletsin vivo. TPO signals through the cellular proto-oncogene (c-mpl) receptor and acts as an important regulator of circulating platelets. High levels of TPO have been observed in patients with aplastic anemia.
