It can act both as an aldol donor and an aldol acceptor in the stereocontrolled production of erythrose. It is used as an important reagent in the total synthesis of (+)-ambruticin, (?)-laulimalide, (?)-salinosporamide A, and (+)-leucascandrolide A.
