This gene encodes a protein responsible for the methylation of aspartic acid transfer RNA. While similar in sequence and structure to DNA cytosine methyltransferases, this gene is distinct and highly conserved in its function among taxa. DNA methyltransferase 2 (DNMT2) might be involved inde novomethylation of newly integrated retroviral DNA in mammalian DNA. DNMT2 functions as a tRNA methyltransferase in lower eukaryotes. DNMT2 plays an essential role in zebrafish development by enhancing cytoplasmic RNA methylation. DNMT2 promotes DNA methylation in Drosophila.
