Rappaport Vassiliadis medium is used for the selective enrichment and presumptive detection ofSalmonella sp. This medium is a modification of Rappaport-Vassiliadis enrichment broth and is used for motility enrichment in Petri dishes. It is a rapid and sensitive medium for the isolation ofSalmonella sp. and can be seeded directly after pre-enrichment.

Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium of the media.Salmonellagenerally survives a slightly high osmotic pressure (due to MgCl2in the medium), grows at a slightly low pH, and is resistant to malachite green compared to other bacteria, thus making it a selective media for the growth ofSalmonella sp.
