It finds use as a photosensitizer in photography. Blackening the silver for jewelleries and disinfection/sterilization of reservoirs. Anti-bacterial and anti-microbial agents. Laboratory reagents. A mixed ionic-electronic conductor. In IR detectors, photoconductors, photovoltaic cells, electrochemical storage cells, etc. Black colorant in ceramic glazes and for niello metal work. Autometallography in the detection of catalytic tissue metals and colloidal gold particles bound to macromolecules.
